Artist's Comments

Yesterday morning, I reread the Donning/Starblaze collection of the first half of Cobalt 60. Yesterday evening, I started this piece, putting my own spin on the titular character and his grasser mount (put the finishing touches on it this morning). I've been a fan of Vaughn and Mark Bode for several years now, but I hadn't read any of their stuff in awhile. I'd even forgotten that I had to seek out the rest of Mark (and Larry Todd's) version of the Cobalt 60 story, so I'm probably going to do that sometime soon. If only I had the cash...

For more about Cobalt 60, there's a good blog post about it here (contains spoilers). Also, any mention of that blatant ripoff Wizards in the comments is highly discouraged.

Toolage: the usual. May touch up later, as usual, but as it stands, I'm pretty happy with this one. Finally, please note that I originally started this as an 800x600 piece, but upped the size to 1024x768 for more working room. It's presented here in the smaller size.

You know, I've never actually seen Wizards before, but I've never heard of Cobalt 60 either, but I just read that the guy who did Cobalt 60 influenced Ralph Bakshi's Wizards and also the "Lord of The Rings." O_O

This is from the link I provided above, posted by a friend of Mark Bode's:

Yeah, Ralph Bakshi quite literally ripped (Vaughn) Bode and his family off when he made Wizards.
Bakshi and Bode had worked together for a lot of years, as MArk points out on the show, and Bakshi had been bugging Bode to make a movie of his characters for years. Bode submitted many script ideas and even partial scripts. After Bakshi screwed over R. Crumb in an underhanded deal, Bode said he'd never work with him again. So after Bode died, Bakshi took Cheech Wizard and Cobalt 60 and combined them into one story and made a few tweaks to the characters and their names and put it out as his own creation. I guess the obvious similarities, obvious enough to us, were apparently not enough for the legal profession or else Bode's family would have been able to sue.
It's so horrible to me because I've always been such a big fan of Wizards. I don't know if I can ever watch it again after knowing how it got made, over Vaughn Bode's dead body.

I am not a fan of Bakshi in the least. I don't like his films, and Wizards in particular lifted the late Vaughn Bode's designs wholesale. Thus, why I'm discouraging mention of him for this post.

Oh... O:
Okay, I don't know anything about either one of the projects, so I guess I'll keep it at that. O_O
